For anyone who has trained in an Asian martial art, in just about any discipline therein, will notice a broad universality of the martial arts regardless of what they are studying.
This book explores the revelation of Aiki/Hapki that was discovered through the accumulation of hundreds of years of training and study. And how this same revelation has broadened its shape and scope to become an all encompassing philosophy that can be found in nearly every major Asian martial arts discipline.
All of this, stemming from the initial codes that made up Bushido, the rules and regulations of the Samurai.
“Grant‘s thirst for knowledge impresses me by the research he does to accurately depict the facts in his book. This book keeps you interested from start to finish and I recommend it to all Martial Art practitioners. “

The Samurai Way eBook Grant Miller Allen Woodman Reviews
This was an excellent book, written by a western linguist with experience in Japan and China who speaks with authority on the topic but with a layman's voice in a very accessible manner.
The book discusses the Japanese development of Bushido but also identifies some non-Japanese influences on Bushido, including religious influences such as Taoism, Zen Buddhism, Confuscianism, Shintoism. The book discusses regional development of the warrior ethic and the distribution of the code from Japan to Korea, and conducts an analysis of commonalities of Aiki Jujutsu, Aikido, and Hapkido to conclude that they come from a common source. The development of Hapkido and Korean martial arts is dealt with in depth.
Part philosophy, history, and primer, this is an excellent read that exposes the universal nature and the underlying truth that martial arts are about much more than kicking and hitting.
Highly recommended.
An extremely unique perspective. Master Miller has significant insight with Chinese and Japanese languages as he lived in both countries. His story about the archery team was an interesting story and for some reason struck me. Master Miller's take on the Korean arts and the possible connection with Hwarang Warriors being a possible influence to the Samurai is sure to raise some brows.
Overall, an easy to read book with some interesting historical pictures and close-ups of a few basic joint locks. Definitely a book that should be in any martial artists collection.
